Summer Essentials

I’ve been burned a few too many times.

Yes, sunburns. As a teenager I roasted myself in the sun with tanning oils and was repping #nospf all summer long. Now, as I approach age 30 I’m realizing that my skin needs to take a front seat and it’s time to get preventative.

In the summer, I usually wear a lot less makeup, don’t style my hair as much, and generally give less fucks. I’m all about low maintenance beauty in general but especially in the summertime.

Below are a few of my summer essentials that I can’t live without.

Maui Babe Browning Lotion:

If you know, you know. This stuff is the shit. I wish I knew the science behind the ingredients but the bottom line is you can use this in lieu of a tanning oil and it gets you DARK. And it has no SPF - which I know sounds counterintuitive to my above comments but when I use this stuff, I somehow don’t burn. I get a nice, golden dark tan that makes me look like I don’t work a 9-5 job and can lay out on the beach all day every day.

Maui Babe After Sun Lotion

I avoid peeling and dry skin with this one after sun lotion. I am obviously partial to anything Maui Babe but I genuinely think that this works better than any other “after sun” lotion. It contains aloe, macadamia nut oil, and Vitamins A, C and E which help preserve your tan (for those of us that need our weekend tans to last the 40 hour work week)

Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen

Apparently, zinc is lit. It’s the ingredient you should look for in all sunscreens. I love sun bum in general but their new line of mineral sunscreens are more natural and are zinc based which means fewer chemicals.

If I have to use an SPF 30, this is it. It smells like a pina colada and blends well so you dont have a lifeguard nose.

Supergoop Sunscreen Oil

SPF 50 is the highest I’ll go and usually I’ll just put it on my face if I’m feeling particularly crispy. This oil from Supergoop is non-greasy and hydrating, and it even gives you a dewy, glowy sort of look. Supergoop is also made with natural ingredients (this one contains meadowfoam, which I’ve never heard of before) but it makes me feel better knowing that it’s free of sulfates and parabens.

Herbivore After Sun Mist

I love herbivore products and this one I bought last summer and bought another bottle this year since I loved it so much. It’s a soothing mist that contains aloe, witch hazel, peppermint and lavender essential oils that help cool and soothe skin. It smells fresh and minty and leaves you feeling hydrated after a few spritzes.

NKD SKN Body Bling

If I feel like I need a little extra bronze or some shimmer on my legs to enhance my glow: this is my new recent discovery that works like a charm. It’s organic and contains pearls to give you a little sparkle if that’s what your into. I’ll use it mostly for occasions when I get dressed up and want a red-carpet looking glow. The best part: it did NOT get all over my sheets, and that is a serious thumbs up in my book.

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush Body Spray

I was the girl in middle school that hoarded coconut scented products from Bath and Body Works and wanted to smell like summer all year round. TBH, I’m still that girl, however this is my adult version of Bath and Body Works and it smells incredible. You honestly don’t need much and it makes you smell like you just came from the beach. I spray it on my neck and in my hair and also all over my clothes. Basically everything. I would probably bathe in a tub of this spray if I could.

Youth to the People Hydrate & Glow Mask

This product is a must-have for dry summer skin. It’s an overnight mask infused with Vitamin C, Squalane, and Hyaluronic Acid (all super moisturizing) and it leaves your skin glowing and hydrated for the morning. It’s not sticky at all (which is a problem with some overnight masks) and almost feels just like a really thick cream. This product definitely helps to keep my skin looking plump and bright.

Youth to the People Air-Whip Moisture Cream

I use this product as a day cream and (pro-tip) keep it in my fridge to keep it cold. It feels AMAZING after you’ve been in the sun all day. It’s super light weight so you can wear it under makeup, and it definitely absorbs really easily and is not greasy at all. It’s almost like putting a green juice right on your face. I love this product and am already on my second jar.
